This fall, at Indianapolis’ Eitlejorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, Daniel Smith will have his first one-man museum show. The honor is part of the Artist of Distinction award from the museum’s 2007 Quest for the West Art Show and Sale.
It has been a year of distinction for Smith. He was one of ten artists featured in Settlers West’s “Stars Over Tucson” this past March. His display, which showcased A Nose for Honey, sold out on opening night. With their
excellent brush work and light-hearted composition, Smith’s lifelike images have become instant collector favorites.
“Bears have an uncanny sense of smell,” says Daniel. “Being omnivorous, they get most of their nutrients from nuts, berries and fish (which are not very filling) so they spend most of their lives searching for food. This grizzly bear has been fortunate enough to find a cache of honey within reach.”

The hush of an autumn morning is barely broken by the quiet rushing of water and the splashing steps of a bull and cow moose. “What drew me to this scene,” says Daniel Smith, “is its abstract quality, the division between the dark, still water of the background and the reflective bright water of the small cascade in the foreground. I always liked the peace and tranquility of running water, like watching a fire at night—it’s got that same mesmerizing quality.”

In prehistoric times bears were revered as gods. To this day, the power and magnificence of the bear stirs our imagination and emotions. Cool Runnings is a captivating portrait of an animal who has inspired both fear and fascination in mankind for millennia. Smith’s realistic style brings every drop of water and each wet hair on the grizzly’s face into sharp focus, making it clear that the artist has spent years studying these remarkable creatures.
Smith received the Artist of Distinction Award at the second annual Quest for theWest Art Show and Sale at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art. He has been invited to participate in the Autry National Center’s prestigious Masters of the American West Fine Art Exhibition and Sale for the fifth year in a row, and Art of the West magazine recently dubbed him one of the “heirs apparents” to Western Wildlife master Robert Kuhn.

The complex social order of the wolf pack is as nurturing and caring an environment as one will find in the wild. An alpha male and female, or breeding pair, form the nucleus of this tight knit family. As with any potential relationship, first impressions will last a lifetime. Few species have undergone the change in public perception, thanks to conservation and education efforts, like the wolf. Dan’s involvement with the Yellowstone Wolf Recovery Project in the mid-1990s, when wolves were first being reintroduced to the Park, reinvigorated his interest in this apex predator. Court and Spark stood out as a collector favorite at the Eiteljorg Museum’s 2010 Quest for the West Art Show and Sale.
Through both his website, www.danielsmithwildlife.com and his Facebook page facebook.com/pages/Daniel-Smith-Wildlife-Art, Dan allows collectors incredible access to both his studio and himself. It’s worth going to both locations and while you are there, sign up for his newsletter as well!

Daniel Smith’s paintings of wildlife, be it bear, moose, bison, crow or even otter, capture the complete essence of a species in a single moment, a brief pause in an otherwise very physical existence. Likewise viewing these paintings leaves us stilled, like hikers or mountaineers who round a bend and come unexpectedly upon the beauty and fierce intelligence of the animals who share our earth.
North American cougars are now largely extinct in the Northeast United States but are still prevalent in parts of the West, notably Wyoming which has the largest North American population. A solitary, stalk-and-ambush predator, cougar favor deer, elk, bighorn sheep and the occasional domestic cattle.
"Fleeting Sun" is unusual for Daniel Smith in that the sunlight is hitting his subject perpendicularly, highlighting the silky, tawny coat against the cool shadows of gathering dusk in the cliffs behind.

“Gone Fishing was inspired by a friend’s photo of brown bears taken in Katmai Park, Alaska,” says artist Daniel Smith. “The cubs are quite small so this would be in spring to early summer. These little guys will stay with their mother for almost two years and won’t reach their full size for another four years. Even the most hardened city-dweller knows about the bond between a mother bear and her cubs. The mother’s extreme protective instincts aren’t unfounded, especially concerning large boars, which will attack and kill cubs. She may be swimming ahead right now but her ears are cocked, listening for the paddles and grunts from the swimmers just behind her. Getting accustomed to water is not just play time for the young cubs. From late-August to mid-September, the sockeye salmon are spawning in the Brooks River at Katmai National Park and the bears are in and around the water eating fish for weeks, putting on the pounds and fat in preparation for November hibernation.
Collectors know that no one paints wildlife in water the way Daniel Smith does. A master of both his subject and his craft, his art is an essential part of any wildlife art collection.

“Living close to Yellowstone National Park has its advantages,” relates Dan Smith, “especially when the bison rut is at its peak in July and August. There are three to four thousand bison in the park gathering in groups of 50 to 300. If you put yourself in the right place, you’re really going to see the dust fly.” This access gave Dan a leg up at this year’s Masters of the American West Exhibition and Sale where the 30” x 48” Heavy Hitters took home the 2011 Bob Kuhn Wildlife Award for best wildlife painting. “It’s an incredible honor,” Smith states with awe. “I’m the youngest to have been selected for this award. You always hope that your work will be recognized, but never expect it. To be included in the ranks of Bob Kuhn, Tucker Smith, Ken Carlson and Kent Ullberg is a privilege.”
Heavy Hitters focus is the look in the eyes of a 2000 pound, six-feet tall by twelve-feet in length bison in rut that lets you know he means business. The ferocity of this intent combined with all that mass is an extraordinary display. The snorting and pawing of dirt builds to the point where the two males make contact. You know by the look in left-hand bison’s eyes that this is the real deal.

Lamar Libations was unveiled at the 2011 Prix De West Invitational Art Exhibition and Sale at The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. Paintings in this show are sold by draw, that is, patrons place an “intent to purchase slip” in a box located beneath each painting. A painting’s box can have none, one or may slips depending on its popularity. In the words of one unsuccessful suitor at the event, “The box for Lamar Libations was stuffed. I didn’t have a chance.” The Lamar Valley is located in the remote northeastern corner of Yellowstone National Park. A destination for serious wildlife-watching, it is home to elk, wolves, bear and bison. “Bison are the North American version of Cape Buffalo,” remarks Dan Smith. “I’ve been on foot around them in their habitat and to say they are intimidating is an understatement. What I enjoy about this painting is that its sedentary feel is in such contrast to the intense nature of the beast.”
“Painting the fur on the American Bison is a challenge in my highly realistic style. But when I do that successfully, you can get a real sense of proximity to this incredible beast. The smooth water of the Lamar River carries golden reflections of the surrounding prairie intermingled with the blue patches of sky. I am really pleased with how this painting came out.”
A second chance has arrived for all the patrons at the Prix De West whose slips weren’t drawn for the privilege of purchasing the original painting and also for those collectors that missed out on Dan Smith’s Sold Out at Publisher Stillwater Crossing. Lamar Libations will be released in both a very limited Fine Art Canvas Edition of 50 and a Fine Art Paper Edition of 100. You don’t need to put your name in a box today for the chance to own this wonderful work of art, but if you wait too long you might just have to.

Black bear is a relatively common species in North America and more so in Smith’s home state of Montana where he is fortunate to be able to do field work practically (and sometimes actually) outside his back door. An accomplished wildlife painter, Smith captured the essence of this bear’s heft and character in this 10x10” original painting. “I feel the pose is somewhat anthropomorphic,” says the artist, “ and therefore people are attracted to the composition.”
This entry in a recent miniature sale and auction sold quickly, but we were fortunate to capture it for a Greenwich Workshop SmallWork giclee edition so that a handful of collectors can own it as well. Daniel Smith is just home from his seventh Masters of the American West Fine Art Exhibition and Sale at the Autry National Center in Los Angeles where he won the 2011 Bob Kuhn Wildlife Award, given in recognition of exceptional artistic merit.

Artist Daniel Smith had yet another stellar year in 2009. He enjoyed a two week research safari to Kenya last summer and in September, both of his entries to the Jackson Hole Art Auction sold. Also in September, Dan was included in the Eiteljorg Museum's Quest for the West Art Show and Sale, an invitational exhibition featuring 50 of the country’s outstanding artists. There he won the Harrison Eiteljorg Purchase Award for Stillwater Crossing, a face-to-face with a buffalo in mid-stream—look for Greenwich Workshop’s fine art edition of this painting in 2010. All of this in addition to gallery shows and invitationals including the November “Small Works, Great Wonders” show at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum and an entry accepted at the prestigious “Birds in Art” exhibit at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum.

"What a stunning painting,” I overheard. “Yes. Yes it is. It’s a Smith,” the collector informed his guest. The acknowledgement of long-term accomplishment and anticipation of excellence summed up in three words, “It’s a Smith.” What sets Dan’s realistic style apart is that he does not overpower the composition with details. In fact, his sensibility of design, color, highlights and shadows are more in line with impressionistic paintings. Tight painting reveals subtle textures in bear’s fur or the nuances of reflected light in running water, while overall the work is the integration of a few basic shapes and forms. An apt mirror of the intricate simplicity of the natural world. “When the fish are running and bear are feasting like this,” says Smith, “they won’t even waste their time eating the entire fish. They’ll focus on the skin and the fatty layer beneath, throwing the rest of the fish aside. On the surface it may appear wasteful, but it is extremely efficient when fattening up for the winter’s hibernation is the priority.

“I haven't done a lot of fox paintings until recently,” says artist Daniel Smith. “We have fox around our home and recently had very regular visits over a two week period from a cross fox which is darker in coloration than this red fox. Fox are very shy, always on the move and somewhat difficult to photograph in the wild. This fox has taken a high vantage point in his relentless search for rodents.”
Red fox (Vulpes vulpes) has a wide distribution and adapts quickly which is why its population has increased alongside that of man. They are omnivores, eating berries and bugs, but prefer squirrel, rabbits, mice and other small mammals.
Radiant Red, a new SmallWorks™ edition from Daniel Smith, captures this elusive member of the canidae family so you can admire it under your roof.

“A slight breach in the moisture laden cloud cover allows the sun to penetrate with its radiant warmth,” relates Daniel Smith. “The cougar’s damp coat emits an ethereal glow as moisture vaporizes into the silent wilderness.  The rocky outcrop creates an excellent vantage point for the resting mountain lion as he surveys his domain.  My home borders the Yellowstone ecosystem and has a healthy population of mountain lions.  It is a rare thrill to experience these elusive predators in the wild.”
There is a return to things that radiate the greatness of our national heritage. One of our most renowned treasures is the American wilderness. Radiant Repose captures the essence of the untamed beauty that that makes the wilderness wild. The painting was created for the 2009 Couer D’Alene Auction. Dan Smith is one of the few artists invited to present new works to the high-end collectors that attend, a testament to the stature of this American wildlife artist.

_There is a conversation going on here but we can only guess at the precise message. “Ravens and wolves share an interesting symbiotic relationship,” says artist Daniel Smith. “Ravens will lead wolves to winterkill because they are not capable of opening up the carcass with their beaks. Once the wolves do the job, they all feast. Vice versa, the ravens will follow the wolves, ever watchful for an opportunity to eat. Ravens are extremely cleaver birds and have been known to taunt the wolves in a game of dare. I have witnessed the taunting with our family dog while the raven was obviously entertained by his reaction.”
Raven Rhetoric received the well-deserved People’s Choice Award at the 2011 Western Visions® Miniatures and More Show & Sale which opened, September 3 at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Daniel Smith was the featured artist at this year’s event. This is a portrait of intimate communication in the natural world that will inspire conversation in your home or office.

Acclaimed for his depictions of the natural world, Daniel Smith is one of the country's foremost wildlife artists. The surroundings in his native southwest Montana continue to inspire him and provide him with the opportunity to paint from personal experience, which gives his work both striking detail and stirring realism. Smith has admitted an attraction to predators and dangerous game and his affinity for great bears is apparent in Retreat from the Heat. As the harsh morning sun heats the earth, the only cool surface available to this magnificent grizzly bear is a rushing stream. The wet fur on his belly and legs attest to the bear's love of the water as he plunges in with his massive front paws. The water itself looks so inviting and the sun, so harsh, that you may have to stop yourself from attempting to share this grizzly's Retreat from the Heat.

As usual for this exuberant wildlife enthusiast and artist, Daniel Smith has been busy. He won the Bob Kuhn Wildlife Award at the Masters of the American West show in Los Angeles in February. After the many feet of spring snow outside his Montana studio melted, he was off to the American Masters Exhibition and Sale at the Salmagundi Club in New York in May and The Prix de West Invitational in June. The artist and his studio were featured in the May/June issue of Art of the West.
Siberian tigers are found in the Amur River region of Russia and China, and in North Korea. Estimates put their numbers in the wild at 200-300. Tiger bone and other body parts are used in traditional Chinese and Korean medicines. Siberians are endangered and protected, and poaching is their pre-eminent threat.
This comment by John Geraghty in his April “Natural Talent” story about Dan in Western Art Collector perfectly describes the majestic portrait of the legendary Siberian. “In viewing the work of this accomplished artist, you are sharing his experiences emotionally and aesthetically, the posture and musculature of his animals personifies a time and place, a natural reaction to their environment.”

Collectors of Daniel Smith’s Fine Art Editions are already familiar with his astonishing versatility. This artist is not gathering moss painting the same one or two species. He is equally at home painting bear in water as he is a thundering herd of buffalo or a mountain lion poised to leap. The subject of Summit Sanctuary is the Dall sheep in a perfect alpine landscape that shows the high elevation these mountaineers prefer. The Dall sheep inhabit the subarctic mountain ranges of Alaska and the Canadian northwest and their adaptation to this rugged high country environment has ensured their survival for thousands of years. Storm clouds may gather on the ridge top but this group of three relaxes in a spot of sun, taking in what must be an expansive view below.

When the Eiteljorg Museum presented wildlife artist Daniel Smith with the Quest for the West Art Show and Sale’s first-ever Artist of Distinction Award, they set the bar exceptionally high. The Artist of Distinction Award, which confers Smith with an exclusive one-man exhibition at this year’s Quest for the West show, represents just significant his work is to the art community at large.
Sun Struck, Smith’s newest Fine Art Limited Edition, demonstrates all the qualities that make the artist an award-winner. While Dan Smith is known for his portraits of elk, we wanted to wait until exactly the right image came along to publish it as a full-size canvas. The instant we saw Sun Struck, we knew we had a winner. As the pale golden dawn greets the mighty elk, Smith’s deft and flawless brushstrokes create a truly unforgettable scene.

The lion, Panthera leo, is one of nature's most perfect creatures. In the lion, one may find strength, grace, intelligence, beauty, nobility and utter and exquisite laziness. The lion is so convincing in his perfection that he has managed to become crowned "King of the Jungle," when in fact lions can currently be found in the wild only on the grasslands. Daniel Smith has perfectly captured the glorious, arrogant perfection of the lion in his newest painting, The Sublime. Smith has captured an idyllic moment, where the greatness of the animal kingdom meets with the shining light of the heavens.

In the mid-1990s, when wolves (which had been eradicated from the park) were reintroduced to Yellowstone, Daniel Smith worked with the Yellowstone Wolf Recovery Project, hiking through the park to observe the habits and environmental impact of the newly introduced wolves. Since then, wolves have become one of his favorite subjects and he paints them in all seasons.
“Living in the mountains of Montana has provided me with ample time to experience snow,” says Smith. “Fresh snow creates wonderful textures and a quiet serenity that is always inspiring. Wolf reintroduction in the West has rekindled my interest in this extraordinary predator.
“My paintings are a reflection of many years of field work and my passion for the natural world. My objective is to share my passion through a scientifically accurate, realistic painting while maintaining artistic integrity.”
