“This red fox is a favorite subject of mine,” says Bonnie Marris. “I have painted him and his progeny on the creek behind my studio for many years. The fox’s physical brilliance is matched only by the brilliance of his mind. He remains alert and analytical of his surroundings at all times. At this moment he sits, captivated by a dragonfly. Perhaps this is a moment of mutual enchantment.” The original Contemplating the Dragonfly sold for $27,500 at the Coeur d’Alene art auction on July 28 in Reno, Nevada. A limited edition canvas from The Greenwich Workshop is an affordable way to take home this award-winning and highly-sought after art.

Texas longhorn cattle were almost extinct by the 1920s since modern day ranchers preferred a breed that could fatten up quickly, and they no longer valued the longhorn’s ability to survive in high heat on little water, but lots of cactus, weeds and brush. Beginning in the 1930s, they were protected and bred in small stocks, mostly out of the idea of the romance of the Old West but later longhorns became popular for their lean, lower-cholesterol meat. Commercial ranchers now breed them with other cattle for their many strong traits including smarts and easy calving. Artist Bonnie Marris had the opportunity to drive these cattle across the river. “They are so wild, as in un-domesticated,” she said. “When you stand 20 feet away from one you feel like you are peering back into history, seeing what cattle were like before we got our hands on them.” They’re beautiful, intelligent and lean. Sounds like a breed apart.

“What you are most unprepared for when you see a grizzly in the wild the first time is the fact that it is so much bigger than you could ever have imagined,” beams Bonnie Marris. “Part of the thrill is that they are so unpredictable¯they are friendly looking but dangerous, they look so soft and yet are so tough, they are so intelligent but so wild. “Watching grizzlies fish is one of my favorite things. They are so preoccupied with the fish and their skills are incredible. They track and corral the fish, even turn over rocks to see if the fish have gone under them. They are so intent on what they are doing they are not bothered by your presence. It is the ultimate artist’s meditation and they simply ignore everything else.
“I really do love Fish Tales. I love that you can see what the bear is concentrating on so attentively. I really wanted to show the roughness of the fur and the cold hardness of the claws. There are so many different patterns in the water, those on the surface and those below it. It’s a very serene painting even though the grizzly is hunting. I like to believe you can hear him breathing.”
Fish Tales was unveiled at the Masters of the American West Exhibition and Sale at the Autry National Center in Los Angeles. The popular painting is now available as both a MasterWork™ Fine Art Edition Canvas in an extremely low edition of 25 as well as a more moderate size Fine Art Edition in an edition of 75. Bring something truly wild and beautiful into your home and purchase one of Bonnie Marris’ Fish Tales today.

“Most wolf pups are born with blue eyes. When they are between two and four months old, the color will change over to the yellow-gold color of their mother’s eyes. By six months, the pups will be nearly her size,” Bonnie Marris tells us. “The pack to which she belongs will share in the feeding and caring of this litter, but most of the time they will be hers to contend with.”
“Wolf pups love to play. They will chase and wrestle with each other just as puppy dogs do. As is often the case in the wild, many of their games appear to be practice for the things they will do as adult wolves. When they are not wrestling with each other, any object becomes fair game for ‘the hunt’. Sticks, feathers, bones or even their mother’s tail is prey to be stalked and captured in the safety of their deep wood rendezvous site.”
A degree in zoology sets Bonnie apart from many wildlife artists. Her understanding of animal anatomy and training in field research gives her an edge when it comes to developing and executing a painting. But she will be the first to say that is not the true secret to creating a great painting. “There must be a passion about what you are painting that’s so strong it’s an obsession. A painter misses the mark when there’s technical skill and knowledge but no life. The animals must come alive.”
Grace Under Pressure is being offered in one size as a Greenwich Workshop Fine Art Edition of 85. This 30” x 20” giclee captures all the special passion and magic that Bonnie infused into her original painting. If you are wild about wolves and looking to bring something special into your home, you’ll find no greater value than Bonnie’s Grace Under Pressure.

The American Buffalo is a huge animal. As adults, the males are over five feet tall and can be up to nearly twelve feet in length. They can tip the scales at 2,000 pounds. There is a herd of nearly 3,500 of them in and around Yellowstone National Park. When the winter’s snow beings fall, they like to stick to ski trails and roads when the deep snow has made it almost impossible to move, but they are often forced to trudge their way through heavy drifts. The editors at "Art of the West" magazine chose "Heavy Drifting" as the cover of their 23rd Anniversary Issue, which also carried a feature story on Bonnie (www.aotw.com).

“My paintings are private moments with the untamed, an intimate moment with the elusive side of the wilderness,” relates Bonnie Marris. “If connections between two people begin with the eyes, I think that when you are introducing people to wildlife, you should begin in the same way, with the eyes.”
“There is a line in a song by Cheryl Wheeler. ‘. . . they hear voices older than time.’ It’s part of the aura around wolves. When you look into their eyes they seem to see so much farther and know so much more than we do. People have come up to me at shows and tell me that they’ve felt it was the first time they’ve connected with a wolf. I get so excited when I hear that.
“I think about our history with wolves and how much, throughout history, we feared them. It seems we are now attempting to understand them rather than fear them. Wolves are so secretive. It’s taken a long time to realize that they share many traits with us. If you think about how family oriented the pack is, it’s amazing. Family is family and we share that social nature.
“We are so busy and so rushed, a painting is a way to stop and spend a few moments discovering something new about the world in which we live. In the end, it gives us the chance to discover something new about ourselves as well.”

The fox’s physical brilliance is matched only by the brilliance of his mind. Cunning, sly and wily, the fox is adept at deception. “Last September I spent seven days backpacking in Yellowstone, which has been a central inspiration for me as an artist,” said artist Bonnie Marris, “but this recent trip was a special gift. I saw so much wildlife and had the joy of camping near the Druid wolf pack for 3 days.” Both the male and female pass time bonding with their pups. There are many Idle Hours with no agenda other than tenderness and play. A wolf’s eyes seem to always have a remote distance, but this mother is in her own world, a place of incredible security, with her two pups. “This is the painting I always wanted to do,” Bonnie said. “I felt somehow completed when it was finished.” Wolves are especially popular among her collectors, too.

“Monet had his garden in Givenchy, I have the Big Crooked,” reveals Bonnie Marris. “I almost feel guilty that I paint this spot so much, but every time I go it feels like I am seeing it for the first time. It’s a real creek near my cabin in northern Michigan. It’s one of those places where the light is wonderful, the sound is wonderful and the air is magic. You can just spend hours there letting the creek flow by. “Every time I go there is a new set of tracks from the most recent creatures to visit. Nearby, there is an active fox den. If you don’t see any when you come around, it’s a good bet that one of them just left. The creek is so crisp and clear that you can see deep into it, a great advantage for the foxes when the trout are running. I can imagine that they enjoy this place as much as I do, picking a spot to simply sit back and take it all in, just laying around listening to the Big Crooked roll.”
Bonnie Marris is recognized as one of the most important wildlife artists painting today. Her palette and style are distinctively her own, making a Marris painting identifiable from across the room. Art of the West’s November/December 2010 issue featured Bonnie as their cover story. Commenting on her blend of realistic and impressionistic painting they said,” . . . she wants the best of both worlds and seems to be finding it.”

“The scene is my favorite wolf-viewing position near our campsite in Alaska,” said the artist. “I always think of this stream as “gold creek” because a legend still persists that gold was discovered here, and a miner’s shack in the vicinity still survives to feed the myth! I watched as these two adults separated from the pack to hunt and fish and one of them did get lucky with a Dolly Varden trout.”
This year marks twenty-five years of Bonnie Marris Fine Art Editions from The Greenwich Workshop so it is serendipitous and fitting that her newest release is a subject close to her very first limited edition with us in 1985. In that edition, titled “The Fishing Lesson,” a mother wolf watches her two cubs at the rocky edge of water as they peer down at what could be dinner if only they figure out how to catch it.
Flash forward 25 years to Lucky Catch, the artist’s 2010 Masters of the American West entry at the Autry National Center. We see two full grown wolves flourishing in their natural element with grace and poise, having mastered the challenges of life in the wild. We couldn’t think of a warmer metaphor for the artist we have published and loved for all these years.

The first year of a foal’s life is essential to its development into a strong and healthy adult horse. For the first few months, the mare will devote her energy to protecting her foal from predators and the elements and from other curious horses in the herd. After three months or so the mare will assume the role of teacher for her foal. By carefully observing its mother’s behavior, the foal will gain a gentle introduction to finding food and water, recognizing danger and social dynamics within the herd. Like a human mother, the mare assesses her foal’s needs and provides for them with a tenderness that touches the heart.
Bonnie Marris’ wildlife family scenes echo human experiences that are both beautiful and universal. Like Queen Anne’s Lace, her popular mother-and-foal scene, Maxfield’s Garden is a sweet tribute to the most perfect bond of all.

Artist Bonnie Marris lives on a farm in Michigan with her husband, three horses and two dogs. Collectors of her work will recognize the coloring on this pair of friends, caught early one warm fall morning when Bonnie stepped outside to check on them. Her horses are her muses and she never tires of following the light moving across their backs throughout the day and the way the whites and shadows in their hair change colors.
“I love this painting because it is as much about the relationship between the horses as it is about the lighting at this time of day and the textures in the grass, alongside the ripples in the water. It’s a meditation, a very soothing piece.”

What separates Bonnie Marris from other wildlife artists is not only her devoted treatment of her animal subjects but her meticulous attention to the scenery that frames them. The landscape acts as a muted but lovely secondary subject in Marris' dynamic wildlife paintings. The horses in "Morning Run" are the embodiment of freedom, pounding forward, needing only to run.
The personality of each horse and their motion can be clearly seen: the strong second-in-command just behind the leader, jockeying for position; the skittish and focused chestnut and the haughty, almost balletic grays at the borders of the group. Considered individually, the horses are magnificent; but as Bonnie Marris paints them, as a herd in motion, they are breathtaking.

Artist Bonnie Marris loves to explore the wilderness. Her first hand knowledge of the wildlife she loves brings an emotional involvement to her art, and, in turn, to the viewer. “To get into a natural environment and see the animals on their own terms is as important as knowing the animals themselves,” says Bonnie, who developed her talent by portraying animals “from the inside out.” Her passion for her subject is only eclipsed by her mastery of the elements of color, composition, light and emotion in aligned perfection.
“I’ve spent so much of my life working with, camping nearby, and studying wolves that their every ‘essence’ has become a huge part of me,” Bonnie says. “Somehow, with every blank canvas, I have the push to paint the ‘ultimate’ wolf painting. Because wolves are so fascinating to me, I keep trying to get closer and closer to them in every way. They look past you, they look through you, they hold you. With Mystere’, we’re as close as he’ll allow us.”

The ideas of communal need and social structure are not unique to humans. Bonnie Marris captures that and more in Night Cap. Luminated by the setting sun, friends gather bragging and talking as they quench their thirst at day’s end. And just like humans, every one has their place. The group leader, the one with the foal, is very proud yet protective. She has a best friend who is closest and whom she will always choose to care for the foal when she cannot. Slightly outside the inner circle stands the interloper or outcast, kept at bay by the glare of the mare. “I really hate the idea of impressing too greatly the habits of people upon the actions of animals,” says Bonnie. “But anyone who has spent time around such a coffee clatch will smile at just how similar the situation is.”

They say opposites attract and this pair of horses, one from each end of the color spectrum, inspired artist Bonnie Marris to create her latest fine art limited edition, Night and Day. “I absolutely love this painting,” says Marris. “The duality of nature combined with the strength and speed infuses this symbolic and poetic piece with an energy all its own. The spontaneity and excitement that comes from a horse is spectacular to watch. But it’s always a challenge to give a painting a sense of movement. These geldings have such a rhythm that against the blurred lighting of the background they appear to sail through the canvas. A blend of delicacy and masculinity, there’s both harmony and play between the two, their enthusiasm and energy the brilliance bounce off one another. While the light plays off the black and white, you still can see every color of the rainbow.”

Pawnee is a portrait of the artist’s horse as a young’un. The American Paint Horse is a uniquely American breed, developed in the United States by a mix of wild mustangs and Quarter Horses. Trustworthy, agreeable, athletic and generally level-headed, they have a good cow sense and are well-suited to working farms. Everything about the portrait of this particular Paint says it’s unique. Each sinewy muscle is visible, with ears alert as the light shafts from above. She has some growing to do and she’s going to be even more beautiful. If you believe in reincarnation, you could do a lot worse than being a beloved horse of this artist in your next life.

Followers of artist Bonnie Marris have already learned about the symbiotic relationship between wolves and corvidae (crows and ravens). Marris’ previous releases on the subject are sold out at publisher or nearly: The Ties that Bind, Too Much Information, News and Commentary. There is a mysterious and wonderful camaraderie that has been observed between both wolves and ravens and wolves and crows.
“Personally, I’m most intrigued by the relationship with ravens,” says Bonnie Marris. “It is mysterious because it can only be imagined or supposed just what they are actually communicating with each other. It has only just begun to be formally studied. There’s an appearance of communication concerning the location of a kill that seems to happen again and again. The wolves will follow the ravens to a kill and although they badger each other back and forth over a kill, they seem to share.
“In this image, the ravens are leading a small group of wolves to a kill they have discovered. I love this painting because it is as much about the relationship between the wolves and the crow as it is about the lighting and rhythm of the composition. The reflections on the water and the backlighting on the wolves worked out very well. It’s a cold, but very soothing piece.”

The distinctive howl of the wolf song is one of the most remarked upon, an almost hypnotic and magical quality of the animal. Hearing this sound is an experience few listeners ever forget. "My life long love affair with wolves is epitomized and celebrated with Sing Out," says artist Bonnie Marris of her latest fine art limited edition. "Wolves have a very special way of sharing good things and bad things-they celebrate both. When puppies are born, the pack breaks into a glorious excited howl with tails wagging. When a pack member returns from an absence, a wonderful reunion howl is the welcoming. When a pack member is lost or dies, again the shared chorus begins. This painting is a celebration of the good and the bad of life. It celebrates bonds of friendship, love and loyalty. This original hangs over the fireplace in my home."

Social Viewpoints was the winner of the David P. Usher Patrons’ Choice Award at the 2012 Masters of the American West! Take pleasure in this prized and privileged glimpse of the carefree nature of the untamed wolf. “Those of us who are social beings have many different ways of looking at things and many ways of communicating our opinions and feelings which is why I had so much fun creating this piece,” Bonnie Marris states. “You can read the viewpoints of each wolf and compare them to your own. I, myself, often feel my view of things is kind of askew from everyone else’s so I guess I'm the wolf in the middle. I don't know if the ‘painting police’ allow the main subject to be upside down but that just how this one just had to be!”
Marris’ Social Viewpoints gives you the chance to make a personal connection with the elusive side of life in the wilderness. This joyous work will be available in two sizes. The over-sized MasterWork™ Fine Art Canvas edition at 45" x 27" and in an edition of 15 makes you feel as if you are a member of the pack itself. With thundering hooves, flashing eyes and pounding hearts, Bonnie Marris’ horses represent all that is truly wild in great wildlife art. Their exhilaration is contagious and their spirit truly indomitable, as Marris’ skill with the brush and empathy with the animal soul brings their joyous freedom to life.
Each morning, as the sunlight rolls over the mountains, these three horses stretch their muscles and begin their travel across the countryside. Today’s leg of the journey begins with a refreshing splash through an ice-cold stream, fresh from the mountaintop. As the water leaps into the air around their knees, the exuberant animals will take different paths over the uneven bottom of the creek bed, but by sunset they will find one another again. By the time the last star has appeared in the evening sky the family will be safe at rest, gathering strength for the next day’s run.

Pick an art magazine and the chances are that they have recently, or are preparing to, publish a story on the artist Bonnie Marris; most recently SouthWest Art, Western Art Collector and Art of the West magazines. She’s invited to participate in more of the major art shows than she can possibly supply and the invitations continue to pour in. The paintings she finishes apart from exhibitions are completed for major galleries. Collectors are drawn to Bonnie Marris’ paintings because the love she has for the animals she paints simply radiates from the canvas. This exhilaration is contagious as Marris’ skill with the brush and empathy for her subject brings to life the joyous freedom of the wild. One of the secrets to the success of her work is showing her subjects engaged in activities that we can easily relate to without imposing human interpretations upon the actions of animals.
With Summer Fields we have a perfect example of such a Marris work. Warm summer winds are blowing the leaves and grasses. The sun heats the colors and edges until they blend into one another. Horses' tails swish and calmness blankets the field. They rest together, best buddies, massaging each other's backs and listening to distant breezes.

"When my mare died, it took me a long time to bring myself to paint her. When I did, though, I remembered that she lived for that summer day when she could canter way out into the field and stand there, bathed in sunlight.
"This started out as a simple color study for a larger painting but there's just such simple beauty and purity in the image of a horse enjoying a summer day. It doesn't have to be my horse. I wanted to get the brilliance of the sun on those days when it's so bright that things look soft when you see them. The sun seems to melt all colors into each other. I blended the edges to make it easy on your eye."

Wildlife artist Bonnie Marris is exuberant about her favorite subjects: wolves, horses and bears but just about any wildlife subject portrayed with their young is the most exciting of all. Marris took what became, for her, an historic research trip to Yellowstone National Park last year because she was lucky enough to witness an unusual number of bear and their young. Stationed near one of the only fast-running rivers in the Park, Marris observed the mother bring her babies down to see water for the first time. A ferocious and dangerous mammal, this mother bear treated her cubs with gentle patience and care.

Wolves have been hunted to almost extinction. Fortunately, Congress established a reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone and parts north. There was a devastating fire in Yellowstone as evidenced in the dead trees. Gradually, nature began its slow process of regrowth. So the trees and the wolves all symbolize a comeback . . . and a rebirth integrity.

Many people do not view the buffalo as wild. Tourists drive through Yellowstone, see buffalo grazing at a distance and think they are domesticated like cows. Nothing could be further from the truth. They're incredibly strong willed and fierce when they feel threatened. This image juxtaposes these powerful animals with a gentle setting - a typical, beautiful spring day in Wyoming filled with sunshine, flowers and (what buffalo really love) mud wallows.

"Wolves have a very playful nature and nothing brings that out like a good, deep snowfall. They love to trench about through the snow with their noses, and when they come up with a pile on their snouts, they're perfectly convinced they're covered--because that's what they see. Sniffing for mice, this big, black timber wolf feels he has camouflaged himself so we can't see him at all. See if you can find him . . . !"

There is a star, that, as the sun begins to rise, gets brighter. It is the only star visible in the morning sky. The Indians had many beliefs about this star, one of which was that all of God's creatures looked to this star as the new day begun. That, in itself, was unification and total harmony between things.
This is a red fox -"Vulpes fulva"- which is standing, early in the morning, by a small pond that he visits every day to look for crayfish and get a drink . . . maybe commune with other fox. It's one of those moments where you are so lucky to catch an animal in its private time, when it doesn't know you are there.

A wolf howl is an amazing, beautiful sound. One member of the pack will start to sing then others, one by one, each on a different note, in a strange, wonderous kind of harmony. Why do they sing? To let each other know where they are, to help establish territory and probably for many other reasons, unknown to humans. This wolf seems to be howling for happiness, celebrating life.
